X51V & Aximizer as Carputer: Video demonstration
Video file

(EDIT 11.04.06) Other webs where you can see the video:
YouTube, justanothermobilemonday, Solsie, ingope.in.ohost.de

Video shows car setup to use X51V & Aximizer as Carputer providing following features:
  1. Bluetooth GPS Navigation
  2. Fast tap Bluetooth dialling.
  3. Music
  4. Movies (not for the driver of course)
  5. Online car diagnostics.
Car setup components:
  1. X51V + Ratoc USB Host + Aximizer
  2. Bluetooth GPS
  3. Bluetooth Cell phone.
  4. 7” VGA TFT w/touchscreen
  5. HD USB + Power inverter (12vDC to 220vAC 300w).
  6. Car diagnostics OBD-II to RS232 adaptor.
  7. USB and SD slots built at car front panel.
  8. (Optional USB keyboard) (EDIT 10.21.06)
REMARKS:
  • Only one mass storage device can work at a time. Not shown in video but car front panel USB & SD slots behaves following way: while having HD USB connected all the time, when plugging a SD card or USB memory it becomes the active mass storage device. When removing it HD becomes active automatically.
  • Not shown in video but a keyboard connected to car front panel USB slot also works fine.
  • Mass storage devices and keyboard use Ratoc supplied driver. Touchscreen uses eGalax driver.
  • M|N5 is not my preferred Navigator, but is the only one I found that behaves properly with following features at a time: mirror mode + horizontal layout + minimize, as video shows.
  • I know fast tap dialling is not fast enough , less taps are required. Still searching for better software.
  • I know, I know, I have to skin it a lot .
  • I am not using motorized in-dash TFT because I could not find anyone able to adjust left & right orientation.
  • My current car diagnostics adaptor is a very simple model that does not change non-standard car baud rate of 10400baud. It only partially works with VagCheck if I reduce CPU speed to the minimum of 104MHz. VagCheck display does not have horizontal mode so video demonstration is done on PDA screen. I am to buy an adaptor based on microcontroller ELM323, there are a lot of very nice programs to work with it.

(Edit 10.06.06) A TO DO list has been added at post #15.

About €100 of Aximizer (+ all my summer vacations )
About €100 of HD USB of 160Gb
€60 of Power Inverter (12vDC to 220vAC, 300w)
€6 of 5mtrs. USB cable.
€100 of GPS receiver BT.
€15 of OBD-II diag adapt. But a ELM323 based costs €30-45.
€275 of TFT VGA TS in-dash
€10 of SD to USB adapt (built-in inside the slot)
€30 of CD changer emulator to get car stero audio input.
€110 of Ratoc CF USB HOST (EDIT 10.06.06)

About €800 (+$1000) + PDA in all. (EDIT 10.06.06)

I routed the USB cable with a lot of work, dismounting several plastic covers.

You are right, HD becomes very very hot. Mine does not have fan but I am going built one inside of 3cm. I did a trip of 1200Km during the summer and it is unbeliable how it could become so hot, but it worked all the trip and is still working

Awesome. This is something I aspire to. I already have the usb host, touchscreen and HD, but haven't found a good way to mount it in the car, and I haven't been able to do anything nearly as elegant as you have done.

Your setup is truly impressive. Felicitaciones, amigo.

n-n-nine-nine hundred $$$?
wow looks liek you p[ut quite a bit of money/work into it.

as to the hdd, you you thought about making a custom water cooler? i mean if you are skilled enough to do something like the aximiser im sure that you could make a cooler for the hdd.
i have an ejclsure of my 120gb wd protojee which has a fan on it. it is a nice inclosure but i dont recommend it, it was a rpyle pain to get the hdd inside and when i did i had a hard time gettign the top cover on. one thing you could try is get something like THIS and find an enclosure that will accomadate it and has a small fan i nthe back. that should give you ample cooling. i would do soethign about the heat pretty soon as heat can casue a good hdd to go bad in a short matter of time.

Think I listed everything, but several things are devices we already have, like GPS or HD USB. If you do not have HD USB you probably have an old IDE HD not in use. HD USB box for it costs only $15.
Think also the TFT is an expensive device. You can get a cheaper video car TFT with no VGA resolution and no VGA input.

Thank you for your directions about HD heat. I really have to do something. I did not take too much care about that because I just have entretaintment data in it. Also beause it pass a heavy test this summer.

your very welcome....one other thing, (this might not make any diffence) you might be able to get some small ram sinks (the stick on)and if your enclosure has room for them you coudl stick liek 20 on the hdd (and maybe some on the outside of the enclosure) as long as you dot stick them over the pressure holles in the hdd you should be fine. it prolly wont make a huge diffence but a few degrees is still worth it....

Please read first Aximizer main thread and then ask me whatever you need.
I know it is a very long thread, but remenber you have links to all pictures published along the thread at first post. It includes schematic diagram.

I am very up set with available dialing software because all of them are only for WM Phone Edition. I am using the only one I found to work in Non Phone Edition version. I does not like it because still to many taps are required to get dialing and do not allow shortcuts. Its name is Contact-ing. But I am still looking for something better.

I tell ya, that's an amazing system with an amazing car mod. The only thing that get's me pretty hard is the price. For 900$ I'd rather get a Samsung Q1 UMPC and mount that...

Very creative though. Are you going to make/sell those sleeves?
